Your guide to sealing and protecting acrylic painted pottery

Painting your own pottery at home is a relaxing and rewarding hobby — and at ArtyPax, we specialise in nature inspired paint your own ceramic kits that don’t require a kiln to finish. But once you’ve lovingly painted your puffin, fox, mushroom or owl, what comes next?
If you're wondering how to protect painted ceramics without a kiln, especially when using acrylic paints, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from sealing indoor pottery to protecting ceramics for outdoor display in your garden or outside space.
🎨 Why You Don’t Need a Kiln with Acrylic Paints
All ArtyPax ceramic kits are made from bisque pottery – that’s pottery that has already been kiln fired once and is ready for painting. When painted with acrylic paints, there’s no need for a second glaze firing. Acrylics offer vibrant colour and are quick drying, making them perfect for home pottery painting.
However, acrylic paints are not waterproof on their own. That’s where sealing and protecting your finished piece comes in.
🔒 Sealing Acrylic Painted Ceramics for Indoor Display
If your painted ceramic piece is going to stay indoors – perhaps on a shelf, windowsill or mantelpiece – sealing it is simple and straightforward.
✅ What You’ll Need:
Water-based clear varnish (matte, satin, or gloss finish depending on your preference)
Soft varnish brush or sponge brush
Clean, dry surface
🪄 How to Seal Indoor Painted Ceramics:
Let your painted piece dry fully – wait at least 24 hours after your final layer of acrylic paint.
Use a clean, soft brush to apply a thin layer of your chosen water-based varnish.
Follow the products recommended application instructions. Generally, you allow the first layer to dry completely.
Then apply 2–3 coats for optimal protection, letting each coat dry before adding the next.
This creates a durable protective layer that protects from dust and fading, and adds a lovely finished look to your piece.
🌦️ Sealing Painted Pottery for Outdoor Display
Want to add your ArtyPax creations to your garden, patio or balcony? You can! But UK weather brings its fair share of challenges, from damp conditions to frost and sun exposure — so outdoor ceramics need a tougher seal.
✅ What You’ll Need:
Outdoor-grade clear acrylic sealant (such as water based yacht varnish)
Optional: UV-resistant spray varnish
Clean, dry brush
Good ventilation (or use outdoors)
🪴 How to Protect Acrylic Painted Ceramics for the Garden:
Ensure the ceramic is fully dry after painting (wait at least 24–48 hours).
Apply a thin, even coat of exterior sealant with a brush or spray, if in a spray can.
Follow the products recommended application instructions. Generally, you let it dry thoroughly, then apply at least 2–4 coats, depending on exposure & protection level.
For extra protection, you can follow up with a UV-resistant top coat spray to help prevent colour fading. Although this step is optional.
This will create a weather-resistant barrier, helping your painted ceramics stand up to rain, wind, and even a bit of sunshine.
💡 Top Tip: If placing your ceramic outdoors, try to position it in a sheltered spot such as near a wall or under a tree to reduce exposure to heavy rain or frost. If a frost is due it’s recommended to bring your ceramics indoors or inside a shed or garage to help protect it.
🚫 What Not to Use When Sealing Pottery
While it’s tempting to reach for household items, avoid using PVA glue, nail varnish, or hairspray as a sealant — they won’t offer long-term protection and may discolour over time.
Also, remember that even with sealing, acrylic-painted ceramics are decorative only – they’re not food safe or dishwasher safe, so keep them for display purposes only.
