Paint Your Own Ceramic Fern Planter
Paint your own ceramic fern planter, available on its own or with six paint colours and a brush. No kiln is needed—simply decorate and allow it to air-dry.
If using it with a live plant, keep the plant inside a separate watertight nursery pot.
This traditional round planter is decorated with raised fern leaves, ready to be highlighted in natural woodland shades, painted in coordinating colours or transformed with a completely imaginative design.
Once finished, use it to disguise a plain nursery pot or hold dried flowers, an artificial plant, pens, pencils or paintbrushes. Its useful shape and botanical detailing make it a thoughtful creative project for gardeners, nature enthusiasts and houseplant lovers.

Is it beginner friendly?
Yes. The raised details make the design approachable for someone painting their first ceramic, while the larger areas leave plenty of scope for experienced painters to add shading, patterns, fine details or mixed-media decoration. Will the recipient need anything else?
Choose a complete kit and they will receive the ceramic, six paint colours, a brush and helpful instructions. They will only need a small pot of water and something to protect their work surface. No kiln or specialist equipment is required. The ceramic-only option is best for someone who already owns craft supplies.
How messy is it?
It is a straightforward tabletop activity rather than a specialist pottery setup. We recommend covering the surface, wearing an apron or older clothes and keeping water and kitchen paper nearby. As with most craft paints, spills may stain some fabrics or surfaces.Approximate measurements:
- Height: 13cm (5.1")
- External diameter: 12cm (4.7")
- Internal diameter at the top: 11.5cm (4.5")#
The planter is hand-cast in earthenware ceramic bisque and kiln-fired at over 1,000°C, creating a high-quality unpainted surface ready for decoration.
Its classic rounded shape is surrounded by decorative fern leaves. The smoother background provides room for blending colours and adding patterns, while the raised botanical details can be picked out in contrasting shades or highlighted using techniques such as dry brushing.
Once decorated, the planter can be used as
- A decorative cover for a small nursery plant pot
- A holder for dried flowers or an artificial plant
- A pen and pencil pot
- A paintbrush or craft-tool holder
- Botanical decoration for a shelf, desk or windowsill
As each ceramic planter is hand-cast, very small variations may naturally occur.
This product includes one unpainted fern planter. Plants, nursery pots and other display accessories are not included, and any painted examples shown in the photographs are for creative inspiration.
Please compare the opening and overall measurements with your intended nursery pot before ordering.
Create a nature-inspired planter using woodland greens and earthy neutrals, perhaps highlighting each fern leaf with a slightly different shade. Alternatively, choose colours that complement your room or transform the design with bright leaves, metallic-looking accents, blended backgrounds or patterns of your own.
The planter can be decorated using the paints supplied with a complete kit or your own acrylic or poster paints. The six kit colours can be mixed together to create additional shades.
You can also experiment with suitable craft materials such as decoupage, glitter, glue or foam clay. Simply decorate your figure and allow it to air-dry—there is no need to return it for kiln firing.
If you have access to your own kiln, the bisque ceramic is also suitable for ceramic glazes and can be fired to cone 06. This is entirely optional and is not required when using ordinary craft paints.
Using your planter with a live plant:
Unglazed ceramic bisque is porous and is not watertight. Keep a live plant inside a separate watertight nursery pot or suitable liner rather than placing soil and water directly inside the ceramic.
For additional surface protection, you may apply a compatible water-based varnish or sealant to the interior, following the manufacturer’s instructions. A separate watertight inner pot or liner is still recommended.
Remove the inner pot when watering your plant, allow all excess water to drain and then return it to the decorative planter. Do not allow water to collect directly inside the unglazed ceramic.
The paints included with the kit will not make the planter watertight. If you have access to a kiln, the bisque ceramic is also suitable for use with a compatible ceramic glaze and can be fired to cone 06.
