Shaped like a seashell, this detailed unpainted seaside cottage has a little door, chimney, porthole-style windows and star-shaped cut-outs, accompanied by friendly crab, fish and clam characters.

Is it beginner friendly?
Yes. The raised details make the design approachable for someone painting their first ceramic, while the larger areas leave plenty of scope for experienced painters to add shading, patterns, fine details or mixed-media decoration.Will the recipient need anything else?
Choose a complete kit and they will receive the ceramic, six paint colours, a brush and helpful instructions. They will only need a small pot of water and something to protect their work surface.No kiln or specialist equipment is required. The ceramic-only option is best for someone who already owns craft supplies.
How messy is it?
It is a straightforward tabletop activity rather than a specialist pottery setup. We recommend covering the surface, wearing an apron or older clothes and keeping water and kitchen paper nearby. As with most craft paints, spills may stain some fabrics or surfaces.Approximate measurements:

The shell house is hand-cast in earthenware ceramic bisque and kiln-fired at over 1,000°C, creating a high-quality unpainted surface ready for decoration.
Its imaginative design combines the shape and texture of a seashell with a little door, chimney, porthole-style windows and star-shaped cut-outs. Sculpted crab, fish and clam characters add further details to discover and paint.
A generous opening at the back provides access for adding and removing a suitably sized LED tealight or another small, cool-running battery-operated LED light. When illuminated, the light shines through the windows, doorway and star-shaped openings.
The finished lantern can bring a cosy coastal glow to a shelf, bookcase, mantelpiece or windowsill and works particularly well in seaside, nautical or shell-inspired displays.
As each ceramic lantern is hand-cast, very small variations may naturally occur.
This product includes one unpainted shell house lantern. The LED light and other display accessories are not included, and any painted examples shown in the photographs are for creative inspiration.

Highlight the star cut-outs, window surrounds, chimney, door and little sea creatures in contrasting shades. You could also add waves, spots, stripes, flowers or tiny patterns to create a shell house that is completely your own.
The lantern can be decorated using the paints supplied with a complete kit or your own acrylic or poster paints. The six kit colours can be mixed together to create additional shades.
You can also experiment with suitable craft materials such as decoupage, glitter, glue or foam clay. Simply decorate your figure and allow it to air-dry—there is no need to return it for kiln firing.
If you have access to your own kiln, the bisque ceramic is also suitable for ceramic glazes and can be fired to cone 06. This is entirely optional and is not required when using ordinary craft paints.
Lighting your shell house:
Once your decorated lantern is completely dry, place a suitably sized battery-operated LED tealight or another small, cool-running battery-operated LED light inside through the rear opening.
- Only use a cool-running, battery-operated LED light
- Never use a lit wax tealight, candle or any other naked flame
- Do not use a light source that becomes hot
- Make sure the chosen light fits safely through the rear opening and sits securely inside
- The LED light or other electric light source is not included

Your ceramic will be carefully prepared and packed at my Warwickshire studio.
Your order is packed in recyclable or reusable materials wherever possible, including a sturdy cardboard box & protective potato starch based packaging. We keep unnecessary plastic to a minimum while making sure your ceramic is properly protected on its journey.
The kit contents and packaging have been chosen so that every element can be reused, recycled or both. Please reuse your packaging where possible and check your local recycling guidance before disposal.
